
EULESS, Texas - The Ashford University men's and women's bowling teams visited AMF Euless Lanes on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 10-11 to compete in the 2012 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional Qualifier.
The AU women's squad placed eighth out of the 13 teams which qualified for the sectional event while the men's team brought home ninth place among the 20 teams involved in the tournament.
The event, one of four sectional qualifiers held around the nation, was a two-day competition which consisted of 64 baker-style scoring games to make up the total team score. From there, the top four teams at each sectional qualify for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships held April 19-21 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Neb.
After closing out day one of the event in ninth place overall with a total pinfall of 5631, the Ashford women's team fired a 5612 on day two to climb over Baker University, finishing eighth overall with a two-day total of 11,243. The Saints scored a 242 as their high game which came during the second day of competition, in game 42.
On the other side of the ledger, the men's squad sat in tenth place after the first day with a pinfall count of 6139. The Saints rallied on day two, but would only muster a day two total of 6100 to leapfrog Midwest Collegiate Conference-foe Viterbo University, finishing in ninth place. AU scored a 241 for their team high score in game 14 of the 64 rolled throughout the weekend.
Wichita State University and Midland University earned first and second place honors, respectively, in both competitions. The Shockers scored a 13,869 on the men's side while totaling a score of 13,037 in women's action.
Cal State-Fresno and Kansas University took third and fourth in men's competition, qualifying for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships. In women's action, West Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin will join Wichita State and Midland in Lincoln with third and fourth place marks.

Ashford returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 31 when both squads visit Indianapolis, Ind. for the NAIA National Invitational Tournament.
