CLINTON, Iowa - Head Coach Josh Heiple and the Ashford University men's golf team are pleased to announce the signings of Brody Fischer and Joar Bjelkholm as the first members of the 2012-13 signing class.
Fischer will join the Saints after completing his senior season at Forrest Hill Central H.S. in Grand Rapids, Mich. Fischer has been a part of two state championship teams as a freshman and junior, as well as a runner-up finish as a sophomore.
In addition to his team's accolades, Fischer finished 10th overall at the state championships his junior year, besting the 12th place finish he recorded as a sophomore. He was also named to the Michigan High School Golf Association First Team All-State as a junior.
Brody is the son of Amy Nelson and John Fischer and plans on studying business at Ashford. He becomes the fourth member of the Saints squad hailing from Michigan, joining current team members Jon LaRue, Dan Balgooyen and Garrett Branch.
"Brody is a talented player," Heiple said. "The top of the MHSAA Division 1 state tournament is basically a collection of NCAA Division-I players. We are thrilled to be able to add a player that can routinely compete at that level."
Bjelkholm will join the Saints after a successful amateur career in Sweden. Bjelkholm has compiled a stroke average of 76, as well as a 7-3 match play record in 15 events since the summer of 2010.
"We are extremely excited to have Joar join us here at Ashford," Heiple added. "He is a talented player who should be able to come in and compete with our returners as a freshman. Our signing class for 2012 is going to be relatively small, so we will count on Joar for immediate contributions."
Joar has yet to decide on a major.
