CLINTON, Iowa - Despite a second half scare, the Ashford women's basketball team finds themselves back in a friendly position; the win column.

The Saints snapped a five-game winless streak on Thursday night, knocking off AIB, 69-61. Ashford got 16 points from freshman Madison Wagner to lead the way to the win.

Ashford also got a double-double (15 pts, 12 reb.) from junior Gaby Ayon, and Courtney Panus finished with 10 points, helping guide the Saints to their first MCC win since Jan. 7 against Clarke.

The Saints started the game out on a 7-0 run, capped by a Panus layup with 18:27 to go in the first half.

The Eagles would battle back to tie the game at nine, but Ashford would seize the lead right back after a free throw from Ayon and layup from Panus, giving them a lead they would hold for the rest of the ball game.

Leading 29-27 with 3:39 to go in the opening half, Ashford closed out the half with a 9-0 run to push the lead to 38-27 at the intermission.

Ashford picked up where they left off out of the break, starting the second half on a 7-0 run that culminated with a three-pointer from freshman Quinn Rear to push the lead to 45-27 with 17:36 to go.

But the Eagles would climb back into the game, outscoring the Saints 23-7 over the next 11-plus minutes, pulling to within 52-49 after a free throw from Caitlin Hagerty.

Ashford would show their resolve in the face of adversity, getting a three from Wagner to pull ahead by five with just over five minutes to go.

From there, the Saints would close out the win at the free throw line, knocking down 10-of-12 shots from the line to hold off the Eagles.

Ashford controlled the glass, out-rebounding AIB at a 42-29 clip. As a result, the Saints also held the advantage on second-chance points, 20-10.

The Saints got a big chunk of their points at the free throw line, knocking down 27-of-36 attempts from the line. Ayon got 13 of her 15 points at the charity stripe.

Ashford also got big contributions from their bench, as the Saints' subs outscored AIB's, 21-10.

Ashford connected on 37.3% (19-for-51) of their shots, while the Eagles hit 39.0% (23-for-59) of their attempts.

Hagerty led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points, one of four AIB players to reach double-figures in the contest.

With the win, Ashford moves to 8-14 on the season, with a 4-7 mark in MCC play. AIB falls to 9-14 overall, 2-9 in conference games.

The Saints will continue their homestand on Saturday when they welcome Waldorf to Kehl Arena for Hall of Fame Day. Ashford will look to get some payback on the Warriors, who knocked off the Saints 53-52 back on Nov. 30.

Tip-off for Saturday's contest is set for 1:00 p.m.
