DES MOINES, Iowa - The Ashford women's basketball team hit the road to resume MCC play on Wednesday night but fell to 12th-ranked Grand View, 64-40.
The Saints (7-12, 3-5 MCC) held the Vikings (15-5, 7-1 MCC) in check for much of the game, but the Vikings got a late run to help their defense close out the home win.
The Saints were led by freshman Quinn Rear's eight points. Fellow freshman Madison Wagner grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go along with seven points.
After falling behind early, the Saints jumped in front of the Vikings with 15:48 to go in the first half after a pair of threes from Rear and Wagner.
But it would be the only lead of the game for the Saints, as Grand View took the lead for good with 13:58 left in the opening frame after a layup by Jennifer Jorgensen put the Vikings up 8-6.
Leading 16-14 with 8:12 to go in the half, the Vikings would outscore the Saints 16-5 throughout the reminder of the half, carrying them to a 32-19 lead at the intermission.
The Saints would climb back to within 10 at 41-31 thanks to a pair of free throws by junior Gaby Ayon with 12:26 to go.
But the Vikings would seal the game after that, thanks to a 12-1 run to pull ahead 53-32 with just under five minutes to go, en route to the 64-40 win.
The Saints were held to 28.9% (13-for-45) shooting from the floor, while the Vikings connected on 39.7% (25-for-63) of their shots. Grand View also held a 38-28 edge on the glass.
Ashford will look to end their current three-game losing streak on Saturday, when they travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa for a 1 p.m. contest against William Penn.
