PELLA, Iowa - After defeating Wartburg on Wednesday, the Ashford women's tennis team kept on the winning track Saturday afternoon when they defeated Central College, 7-2. The Saints swept the doubles portion of the contest before earning victories in the top four singles matches to handily defeat their NCAA Division III opponents.

At #1 doubles, Anastasia Dabiza and Montseratt Elizondo teamed up for a 8-4 victory while Ana Mayagoitia and Andreina Guedez teamed up at #2 doubles to win by the same margin. The Saints' #3 doubles team of Sami Melcher and Sara Vach had a little bit more competition in their match, but helped AU sweep the doubles portion of the contest with an 8-5 victory.

"I thought we played very well, especially in the doubles portion of the dual," said Head Coach Chad Fenwick. "It was especially encouraging to see Sara to do well after being injured against Wartburg on Wednesday."

Dabiza, a Skokie, Ill.-native had little trouble with her singles match, winning 6-0, 6-2 while Guedez looked equally impressive at #3 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Elizondo and Mayagoitia also emerged victorious at #2 and #4 singles, respectively. Elizondo won 6-2, 7-5 while Mayagoitia handed her opponent a 7-5, 6-3 loss.

"The two teams we beat this week are perennial powers in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and I think it was great for our confidence to get these wins," continued Fenwick. "These are teams that we wouldn't have beaten ten years ago and it's exciting to be able to see the progress we've made."

The Saints will return to competition this Friday in St. Louis, Mo. at the ITA Regional Tournament.
