HANNIBAL, Mo. - The Ashford University women's cross country team placed second in the Hannibal-LaGrange Invitational on Saturday, the second straight week they're finished as runners-up.
The Saints got a record-setting performance from freshman Emily Paull of Somonauk, Ill., as she took first place overall and set the course record in the process with a time of 20:06 in the 5K race.
However, the Saints got out of the gate a little fast, and that may have cost them the top team spot in the meet.
"We took off way to fast the first mile and paid for it later in the race," Saints Head Coach Tyson Graham said. "We need to learn from our mistakes and forget this meet. We did not run to our full potential today. Everyone knows they are at least a minute faster than they performed today. "
Paull was joined in the top-10 by freshmen Angela Woolbright of Rockford, Ill., who finished in the fifth after recording a time of 20:37 and Soryia Sabir, who finished eighth with a time of 20:48.
Juniors Raven Ruger (13th/21:44) and Samantha Young (15th/23:02), freshman Marissa Klinger (16th/23:15), junior Esther Conde (20th/25:13) and sophomore Kierra Canier (25th/28:33) rounded out the times for the Saints.
"The women were missing a few runners today," said Graham. "So we were running a young group of girls today and it showed. We worked hard this week and ran a lot of miles, so we're going to get a little rest over the next two weeks before we get back after it."
The Saints will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 23 when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to take part in the Clarke University Invitational. That meet starts at 4:00 pm.
