CLINTON, Iowa - Clarke College erupted for 10 runs in the second inning on its way to defeating Ashford University in a nine-inning Midwest Collegiate Conference baseball game on Thursday, 18-9. Ashford's slide extended to nine games as the Saints fell to 5-13 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
Out of the gates, Ashford was plagued by miscues in the field stemming from three errors, two passed balls and a hit batsman in the first inning as four Clarke runs came across to score. AU starter Matt King (1-3) struggled with command of the strike zone and lasted just 1 2/3 innings.
Clarke belted three home runs in the second inning, including a grand slam by third baseman Jared Krasselt. Leadoff hitter Dean Molitor and designated hitter Tony Harvat also went deep as the Crusaders' lead swelled into double digits.
The Saints put their first run on the board in the second inning from a solo shot to straight-away center by first baseman Adam Wojciechowski, his second of the season.
Ashford battled back with a seven-run fifth inning, highlighted by an Elliot Swiatly three-run homer, his first of the year.
Demetric Turner took a pitch to the helmet to drive in a run, Tim Elias chipped in a sacrifice fly, and senior Jake Steve drove in a run with a single.
But by then, the damage had been done.
The Saints did their job defensively, holding the Crusaders scoreless through the final 4 2/3 innings, but Ashford's offense was quieted as well.
Ashford senior fielders Steve and Brian Cummings combined to throw 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Steve and Cummings each recorded three hits at the plate, combining for three doubles.
The Saints will try to get back on track this weekend on the road for a series match-up against Waldorf College. Games for Saturday and Sunday are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
