DAVENPORT, Iowa - Sparked by a season-high 18 hits, the Ashford University baseball team snapped an 11-game slide by picking up its first win in Midwest Collegiate Conference play, downing St. Ambrose University, 10-6, Wednesday evening in Davenport, Iowa.

The Saints upped their season record to 6-15 (1-6 MCC) as the Fighting Bees dropped to 9-14 (2-3 MCC).

The game was originally scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., but construction at the stadium pushed the matchup to an evening affair that started at 6 p.m.

Senior third baseman Brian Cummings continued his torrid hitting streak, driving home a pair of runs on two doubles in six trips to the plate.

Cummings, who homered twice in Tuesday's homestand against Robert Morris College, extended his hitting streak to nine games while hitting .454 (5-for-11) this week alone.

A Clinton native, Cummings had plenty of support from his teammates as Ashford's bats pounded out their 18 hits against three St. Ambrose hurlers. Every starter in Head Coach John Govek's original lineup recorded a hit as the team's average increased to .262 on the year.

Sophomore outfielders Austin Poindexter and Anthony Misitano combined for seven hits and four runs in 10 at bats at the top of the order, setting the table for the middle of Saints' lineup.

Senior outfielder and clean-up hitter Jake Steve recorded three hits and sophomore first baseman Adam Wojciechowski had a game-high three RBI. 2008 All-MCC Honorable Mention selection Tyler Sukut added a bases-loaded two-run single in the third inning.

Ashford opened with two runs in the first inning, capitalizing on Cummings' run-scoring double and a fielder's choice RBI by Wojciechowski. Wojciechowski plated two more runs in the sixth frame with his first triple of the year.

Back-to-back doubles by David Moore and Riley Jenkins in the first inning gave the Fighting Bees their first run, but Ashford held St. Ambrose scoreless for the next seven innings.

The Saints staved off a five-run rally by St. Ambrose in the eighth that made it 7-6 and three insurance runs by Ashford in the top of the ninth clinched the win.

Four Ashford pitchers allowed 10 hits and just three earned runs in the nine-inning contest.

Sophomore Brandon Meyer (1-0) and freshman Steve Happ combined to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Billy Becker who allowed three hits and one run in two innings.

Meyer received the win, giving up one hit in two innings of work.

Ashford returns to conference action this weekend in Des Moines, taking on Grand View University (6-16, 3-3 MCC) on Saturday and Sunday. Both days are slated to start at noon, with Saturday featuring the doubleheader.
