KERRVILLE, Texas - Schreiner University starting hurlers Rebecca Hay and Allyson Morris silenced the Ashford University softball team on Tuesday, limiting offensive production to one run on just four hits during an afternoon doubleheader sweep, 6-1 and 9-0.
The Mountaineers (2-4 overall) used a four-run first inning to take the opening contest and plated at least one run in the first three innings of a rain-shortened nightcap to complete the sweep.
Four different players collected hits for the Saints (0-4, 0-0 MCC) on the day, highlighted by an RBI single by freshman shortstop Stephanie Hebison of Fremont, Calif., and a double by senior outfielder Marissa Thede of Davenport, during game one. Junior Haley Holmes of Manly, and senior Kaitlin Welch of Bettendorf, added singles in game two.
After Hay tossed a complete game, seven-strikeout performance for the Mountaineers to begin the day, the Saints' woes at the plate continued when Morris took the mound for game two.
The Saints took an early lead 1-0 in game one when Hebison's single drove home freshman Kyndel Dollison of Evansville, Ind., in the first inning. But Schreiner responded with back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom half of the inning and would lead 4-1.
Hay issued only two walks and one earned run to pick up the win.
Freshman Shayna Ehlers of Farmington, Ill., suffered the loss for Ashford in game one, giving up all six earned runs on 12 hits.
Weather shortened the second game to only five innings, but another four-run inning pushed Schreiner past the Saints. Already leading 3-0 heading into the third inning, the Mountaineers' Kayla Avreitt took a pitch from junior Nicole Woodard of Carbon Cliff, Ill., over the fence for a solo home run.
Morris would help out her own cause at the plate unloading the bases for a three-run triple to put the Mountaineers ahead 7-0.
Two additional runs in the fourth inning came across to score for Schreiner in the fourth inning before the second game ended in the top of the fifth inning.
The Saints will continue their spring break trip in Texas on Thursday, taking on Northwood University (Texas) for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. in Dallas.
