DES MOINES, Iowa - Junior J.D. Fabian of Highland, Ind., hurled a complete game four-hit shutout in the second game of a doubleheader against Grand View University to spark Ashford University's baseball team to its second conference win on Saturday.

The Saints dropped a nailbiter in the first game, 7-6, before coming back to shut out the Vikings in six innings in game two, 11-0, on Grand View's campus in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ashford's moved to 7-16 overall and the Saints are currently sitting at 2-7 in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.

On the heels of a season-high 18 hits against St. Ambrose University earlier this week, Ashford raced out to a 2-0 lead through the early innings, receiving an RBI double by senior outfielder Jake Steve and a sacrifice fly from sophomore outfielder Austin Poindexter.

The Vikings offense got on track, scoring in three consecutive innings to grab a 6-2 lead.

Steve unloaded the bases with a grand slam in the fifth inning to rally Ashford from four runs down to tie it at 6-6. He deposited a 2-2 offering from Grand View's Jon Bianchi over the left-field fence -- nearly landing in the adjacent softball diamond.

On the day, the senior slugger totaled eight RBI on five hits, boosting his average up to .337 this year.

Grand View scored the go-ahead and winning run in the bottom off the sixth inning on an RBI single, but the Saints generated baserunners to give them a chance to at least tie in the top of the seventh inning.

Steve got on base with a one-out single in the top of the seventh and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He was able to get to third on an error as Adam Wojciechowski represented the winning run. With runners on the corners and one out, freshman catcher Cameron Puetz was induced into a game-ending double play as he grounded out 5-4-3.

"I thought we really played well in game one, but a few baserunning mistakes cost us some runs," said Ashford Head Coach John Govek. "We came really close and fought hard to the end."

The Saints produced a 12-hit offensive attack to back Fabian in game two, who went the distance for the second time in six starts this year.

"J.D. gave us what we needed today and he was lights out," said Govek. "The guys were hitting the ball well, but it was a strong performance on the mound that allowed us to rest our bullpen against a great Grand View offense known for knocking the ball around the park year in and year out."

Fabian didn't allow a hit until the top of the fourth inning and handcuffed a typically explosive Viking offense. A transfer from Joliet Junior College, he allowed four hits and struck out five while allowing just one free pass -- an area the 6-3 righty had targeted since his last start against St. Ambrose.

"I was just trying to throw first-pitch strikes today and get ahead in the count," said Fabian. "I tried to throw it low in the zone because it's been something Coach (Govek) has been preaching and it helped set up the breaking ball. I've been working on my control to try and cut down walks."

Ashford shifted into high gear and didn't let its foot off the accelerator, opening with a three-run first inning and kept padding the lead with a four-run fourth and added three more in the sixth.

The Saints committed no errors and struck out just four times while pounding out five doubles.

Multi-hit performances came from the bats of the leadoff hitter Poindexter, Steve and freshman infielders Demetric Turner and Michael Caravia. Turner had a perfect day at the plate going 3-for-3 with an RBI double in the first inning and also scored twice.

Ashford returns to action this week, heading to Waldorf College on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and Wednesday's game is set to start at noon. The games represent makeup dates from rained out games March 28-29.
