CLINTON, Iowa - Coming off its first victory as a program on the men's side, the Ashford University women's tennis program signed its first recruit for next season earlier this month, gaining the recent commitment of Jessica Albers of Rochelle, Ill.
Albers becomes the first recruit to sign with the revamped Saints' women's program for the 2011-12 campaign beginning next fall. This spring, the program has been temporarily undeclared due to roster size minimum requirements.
"I'm ecstatic about having Jessica join our program," AU Head Coach Chad Fenwick said. "I believe she can have an outstanding career as a Saint and I am really excited about the opportunity to work with her."
A two-time Illinois state qualifier, Albers played as the No. 1 singles player for the Rockets for the past two seasons. During this past season, Albers finished second in her sectional prior to competing at the state meet.
As a junior, Albers qualified for state after winning her sectional for Rochelle.
The most impressive feat of Albers accomplished career to date, however, is that she came into high school without any previous tennis playing experience. After a friend suggested she join the team, Albers served as the No. 2 singles player on the junior varsity squad and moved up to varsity as a sophomore.
The daughter of Maria and Mike Albers, Jessica has two other siblings, Cole and Noah. A prospective Business major when she arrives to campus, Albers chose Ashford over St. Joseph, Benedictine University and Loras College.
